(November 2019) – A driver in a gray GMC pickup truck was shocked when a flying tire rolled into the middle barrier on South Main near Hillcroft and went airborne, smashing down on his vehicle. The incident happened at around 3:00 p.m. on Friday, according to authorities. The tire came from a trailer that was hauling a wood chipper on the other side of South Main. An accident involving that vehicle sent the tire flying over the barrier and into oncoming traffic. The driver who was pulling the trailer stopped at the scene to provide assistance.
Witnesses said that the driver of the GMC pickup suffered minor injuries in the accident.
According to KHOU, loose tires have been a problem in Houston in recent years, even causing a fatality two years ago when a tire flew off a damaged axle and killed a driver on the Pierce Elevated. A loose tire on the North Freeway shattered another car’s windshield earlier this year.
TxDOT spokesman Danny Perez told KHOU of the incidents involving loose tires: “That’s why we ask folks when they’re traveling, expect the unexpected.”
